Description

This day trip to Xi’an from Beijing includes round-trip air travel plus a private tour of the UNESCO-listed terracotta warriors and highlights of the Old City of Xi’an. Travel by private vehicle to Qin Shihuang’s mausoleum to see the emperor’s life-size army, followed by a dumpling buffet for lunch. You’ll visit Big Wild Goose Pagoda, the ancient city wall and the Muslim Quarter before flying back to Beijing.

You’ll be picked up at your Beijing city hotel for an early morning flight. Upon arrival at the Xi’an airport, your expert local guide escorts you to a comfortable, private vehicle to experience all that Xi’an has to offer. En route to your first stop, talk with your guide about the city’s rich history, and share any particular interests you have so that commentary can be tailored to your needs.

Start with a morning visit to the world-famous terracotta warriors. Learn about the first emperor of the Qin Dynasty, who ordered the making of a terracotta army during his reign, and see some of the estimated 8,000 life-size soldiers and horses that were buried in Qin Shihuang’s tomb, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to protect him in the afterlife — a testament to his power.

In the main and most impressive vault, see figures arranged in typical battle formation in 11 columns comprising officers, soldiers holding spears and swords, and others steering horse-drawn chariots, as if ready for one last battle. If you’d like, explore the museum exhibits displaying artifacts and a film on the fascinating history of the mausoleum.

At midday, enjoy a tasty lunch at De Fa Chang, one of Xian’s most renowned restaurants, and choose from a dizzying selection of dumplings and other tasty and authentic regional dishes.

In the afternoon, continue sightseeing the best of Xi’an, including Old City sites. Be whisked away to the ancient city wall, one of the oldest and best preserved in all of China. First built in the 2nd century BC when Chang’an (as it was then known) was an ancient capital, the existing wall dates back to the Ming Dynasty and was completed in AD 1370.

Marvel at the wall, approximately 9 miles (14 km) in length and surrounded by a deep moat, before continuing on to visit the city’s Muslim Quarter and then the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. Built in AD 652 during the Tang Dynasty as a holy place for Buddhists, it remains an iconic symbol of old Xi’an. Standing in the Da Ci’en Temple complex, this pagoda was built to house important Buddhist relics and figurines brought from India.

From here, hop back in your private vehicle for the transfer to the Xi’an airport in time for your return flight. You will be greeted on arrival in Beijing and driven safely back to your hotel just in time for a good night’s sleep.
