Enjoy the panoramic views of the mountains, valleys and sweeping vistas of the countryside below.

The Jiankou wall, aptly named Arrow Buckle as it is shaped like the letter W is often described as ‘wild’ and untouched so for the more adventurous represents a once in a lifetime, hiking experience. Most of this section is still in its original state, so in parts quite hazardous and challenging.

Be prepared for an early morning pick up at your centrally located hotel. After meeting your professional guide, you’ll drive to Xishanzi village in Huairou County, some 2 hours from Beijing. Your hiking adventure starts here.

From the parking lot in Xishanzi village it’s a 45-60 minute walk through the village to the northern tower of the Jiankou Great Wall, Zhengbeilou Tower. This part of the wall was built and runs along quite steep and rugged mountain peaks and terrain.  From the summit be rewarded with an amazing view. Towards the west a breathtaking view of the Jiankou section and to the east, the Niujijiaobian Watch Tower, (Ox Horn Edge), some 1000 meters above sea level.

The Jiankou Great Wall is considered to be one of the most challenging sections of the Great Walls. It is steep and many of the stones are loose.

Your hike takes you in the direction of the Niujijiaobian Watch Tower, some 40-60 minutes’ away. The Niujijiaobian Watch Tower is considered quite treacherous so unless you are an experienced or seasoned hiker it is recommended to skip it and take an alternative 15 minute detour or shortcut before rejoining the wall again. Your guide will lead the way.

The section between the Zhengbeilou and Niujijiaobian Watch Towers is considered some of the most picturesque and as such is a hot spot or favoured location for many of the photographs taken of the Great Wall. Your guide will show you the ideal spots to take short, well-earned rests and refreshment.

From here your hike continues along the wall until you reach the Mutianyu section, a section of the wall that has been restored and is thus well preserved. This final stretch typically takes about 2 hours in total. The renovated section of the wall starts at Watch Tower # 23.

The section between Watch Tower #23 and #14 is considered to be the most scenic section of the Mutianyu section. From Watch Tower #14 you can choose to descend the wall or continue on to Watch Tower #6 where you can choose between the chair lift and the toboggan ride for your descent.

After lunch you’ll be taken back to your hotel, rewarded with the knowledge that you have joined the ranks of the few who have really experienced and hiked the Great Wall of China.
